DARE Award

Carol Meyer Science Award

DAR Award

Tchefuncte Middle School recently presented  District Attorney Awards to one student from each grade level who were  chosen for their outstanding character and leadership qualities. Kid Biz Read to Succeed

Youth Flag Design


Tchefuncte Middle students participated in the Youth Flag Design exhibit and awards May 5, 2014, at the State Capitol.  The event was sponsored by the Louisiana Art Education Association. Continental Mathematics League
Winners Proclaimed

Since November, Tchefuncte Middle School’s Gifted Math students have been utilizing their analytical reasoning capabilities by competing in the renowned Continental Mathematics League.  A monthly challenge experience, designed to maximize young mathematicians’ opportunities to advance their problem solving capabilities, posed students with 30 minutes to solve six complex, higher-level problems. 

They participated with other students from schools all over the United States.   Yusuf Malik, a two-year winner, states, “CML was a great and competitive way for me to grow in critical thinking skills.  It taught us ways of math and real life.”   Cumulative scores were tallied and winners for the year are proclaimed:

Tchefuncte Wins National PTA Award


Tchefuncte Middle School recently won a National PTA Award for parental involvement as a result of its “Take Your Family To School Week” activities in February. Representing Tchefuncte Middle at the recent School Board meeting where they were honored for the event were, from left to right, are PTA President Sherri Ventsam, PTA Vice-President Yvette Benson, Principal Dr. Mitch Stubbs and Sixth Grade Teacher and PTA Educator of Distinction Donna Clement.

National PTA® has recognized the Tchefuncte Middle School PTA with a $1000 grant for its efforts to strengthen family engagement in St. Tammany Parish Public School System through PTA Take Your Family to School Week. Tchefuncte Middle School's PTA is one of only 51 PTAs, nationwide and in Europe, selected to receive a grant. Being recognized with a grant, demonstrates Tchefuncte Middle School's leadership and commitment to building family-school partnerships to support student success and school improvement.

"Decades of research shows that when families and schools work together, student achievement increases, schools improve and communities grow stronger," said Otha Thornton, National PTA President. "PTA Take Your Family to School Week is designed to spotlight the importance of family-school partnerships and expand and enhance family engagement efforts in schools across the country. We are pleased to recognize the hard work and dedication of Tchefuncte Middle School PTA to ensure families are involved in Tchefuncte Middle School and St. Tammany Parish Public School System, during PTA Take Your Family to School Week and throughout the year."

This year, PTATake Your Family to School Week will be marked Feb. 17-21, 2014 and will incorporate the theme "Supporting Student Success." The timing of the week honors the day PTA was founded: Feb. 17, 1897. Throughout the week, PTAs and schools across the country will host family-focused events with an emphasis on addressing risks associated with high school drop-out by raising awareness of bullying prevention and multiculturalism, increasing arts participation and improving literacy and math skills.

During PTATake Your Family to School Week, the Tchefuncte Middle School PTA will help host an Extra-Curricular Extravaganza and a Multicultural Night to showcase a TMS Family Heritage Celebration.

"Show You Care" Bears

Tchefuncte Middle School's S.G.A. recently participated in Random Acts of Kindness Week by collecting over 200 stuffed animals to donate to the local fire and police stations. These "Show You Care" bears and other stuffed animals will be given to children at local hospitals and children in crisis.

Student of the Year

Grant Awarded


Fourth grade math and science teacher Stephanie Rousseau at Tchefuncte Middle School in Mandeville was awarded a grant through the Quality in Science and Mathematics Council (QSM) to purchase STEM learning tools for her classroom. Grand Prize Winners


At the Region VIII Social Studies fair held at Southeastern Louisiana University on Feb. 5th, Tchefuncte Middle School students, Yusuf Malik, a fifth grader, and Matthew Larsen, a sixth grader, were Grand Prize winners for their divisions. Yusuf was the Grand Prize runner-up for Division I, which is grades 4-5, and Matthew was the Grand Prize winner for Division II, which is grades 6-8. State Representative Visits School Cafeteria

Area Louisiana state legislators were recently invited to visit schools in St. Tammany Parish to learn how the food service programs and school cafeterias play an integral part in the health and education of students.  On Monday, February 3, Representative Timothy Burns visited Pontchartrain Elementary and Tchefuncte Middle School. He was given a “chef’s hat” to wear while working in the cafeteria. He met with cafeteria managers and principals and was brought up to date about new menu requirements and opportunities.

Middle Ages Castle


Mrs.Tiffany Hewson's 6th grade class at Tchefuncte Middle School finished up a study of The Middle Ages with an extra credit 3-D castle assignment. Reading for Pizza!

Elizabeth’s Sullivan’s fifth grade class at Tchefuncte Middle School celebrated “Top Class for AR” by earning 1,177.3 points.

Choir Auditions Held


District IX Honor Choir auditions were held on Sat., Oct. 19th at Fontainebleau Jr. High. These students from Tchefuncte Middle auditioned and were chosen to participate. Students from across St. Tammany Parish, Washington Parish, and Tangipahoa Parish will practice separately, then together, and perform a concert on Sat., February 1, 2014 at 2:00 pm at Ponchatoula High School. Our middle school Honor Choir will be working with clinician Randall Boyd. The public is invited to attend. Sublimation Studies

Mrs. Carolyn Carney's 6th grade science classes recently enjoyed a science lab in which they investigated sublimation.  Labs really make the science concepts come alive!

Energy Consumption Presentation


The Tchefuncte Middle School 5th grade science classes of Mrs. Sandra Jourdan and Ms. Deanna Desmond recently finished a science unit on Energy and Forces.  Mr. Chavez from Exxon visited the classroom and talked to the students about different topics that were studied during this unit.  Mr. Chavez presented a power point that informed students about how much energy is consumed in the United States and in the world.  He also talked to the students about how important it is to conserve energy and ways they can help at home.  Students connected information with their Energy unit from school. Hooray for Heroes


Librarian Theresa Currie, and her daughter, 4th grader Opal Currie, exhibit their superhuman strength at Tchefuncte Middle School's "Hooray for Heroes" Family Night. TMS families rotated through stations that celebrated real life heroes and presented ways for our students to become heroes in our community.



Hummer Limousine Ride

Several students from Tchefuncte Middle School were treated to a Hummer limousine ride, lunch at Carretta's, and dessert at Fruitberry for their outstanding behavior and participation in the TMS Walk-a-Thon fundraiser.

Cricket in Times Square


For the past several weeks , the fourth-graders at Tchefuncte Middle school read the novel, Cricket in Times Square.  During the novel the students built their own cricket cages (Bottom Nadia Kolbus), and after completing the novel,  Charlotte Couvillion’s  classes had a celebratory Chinese dinner like the one in the book (Top right - Emry Estes). They enjoyed eating with chop sticks and discussing the book, which brought the novel to life in a fun way! Students also completed a creative book report. Tad Druery chose to develop a board game for the novel (top left)!


Musical Instruments


Students in Stephanie Rousseau's fourth grade science class enjoyed learning about sound through creating their own musical instruments using recycled materials. Ancient Babylon

Tchefuncte Middle School sixth-grade social studies students in Mrs. Jiles' class made their theatrical debut this year as they learned all about the beginnings of law in Ancient Babylon.  "Hammurabi and His Law Code" was performed in a set of two casts to family, friends, and neighbors!  Seth Rubin stated, "The best part of the Hammurabi Law Code is that the belief that the strong should not oppress the weak.  There were laws that tried to protect people with little political power, as children and widows.  Although, some laws were quite harsh."  A lesson to show the beginnings of law as we know today turned out the be great fun!

Geaux Pink


Students at Tchefuncte Middle School participated in the "Geaux Pink" day to raise money for the Mary Bird Perkins Breast Cancer Center. Students and staff donated a dollar or more to wear jeans and pink shirts to show their support for breast cancer survivors and victims. Walk A Thon

Britton Everett, a 6th grader at Tchefuncte Middle School, was the winner of the Walk-a-Thon t-shirt design contest. The Walk-a-Thon will be held on Saturday, Nov. 2nd at Mandeville High School track and will be a fun night for everyone.
