l

Two Lancaster Elementary students received the District Attorney's Award at this year's awards ceremony.  These students are true leaders and role models, they excel in all of their classes, and they are respected by their peers and adults.

Principal's Awards

Students at Lancaster Elementary received the Principal's Award at this year's awards ceremony.  The students were selected based on helping others, being a "model" student, being a hard worker, and making good choices, despite peer pressure.

Pink Day

l

Staff and students at Lancaster Elementary School proudly wore pink to promote breast cancer awareness. Donations that were collected were given to two teachers battling the disease.

Costume Creations

 

Talented Theatre students at Lancaster Elementary were given a character description and created a costume based on the assigned character using recycled materials.  They had to include elements of costume design such as line, color, shape, and texture.  They collaborated in small groups to create a sketch of their ideas.  They then made their costumes using recycled materials such as, newspaper, tin foil, cardboard, coffee filters, candy wrappers, duct tape, and many other recycled materials.

Fitness Meet Athletes

l

Youth Author Honored

l

Andrew Perrilloux, a student in Mrs. Sarah Meyer's 5th grade gifted class at Lancaster Elementary, recently took top honors in the 2014 Young Authors'  and Newspapers in Education Competition. Andrew is shown here with his certificate and medal received for winning 1st Place in the Nonfiction Category with his essay titled "Art."

Students at Lancaster Elementary School enjoyed a rockin' testing pep rally before the LEAP and iLEAP tests were taken in April.  The pep rally included testing tips, motivating songs performed by teachers, and an exciting game of "Are You Smarter than Your Teacher?"

Storytelling Shared

l

Brother Roscoe visited the fifth graders at Lancaster Elementary School during Literary Week and shared his gift of storytelling through music and acting.  Several students were brought on stage to participate and the audience also was involved.  His African tales left an impression on the students to always “Do Their Best”.

Third grade students at Lancaster Elementary School enjoyed a visit from author Cornell Landry during Literary Week.  Mr. Landry, a native of New Orleans, read several of his books to the students that focused on Louisiana culture and traditions.  He also explained how his ideas become a book through the book making process. Bones Studied

l

Students in Mrs. Jerrilyn Swett's third grade class at Lancaster Elementary recently studied bones and the digestive system. In order to better explore what bones look like and how they are digested, the students dissected owl pellets. They were surprised to find whole bones, fur, and feathers inside of the owl pellets! First Place Winning Author

Andrew Perrilloux, 5th grade gifted student in Mrs. Meyer's class at Lancaster Elementary, won 1st Place in the Young Authors' Contest for his nonfiction entry.  He will now go on to compete at the district level.

Novel Projects

Students in Mrs. Sarah Meyer's 5th Grade Gifted Class at Lancaster Elementary recently shared their novel projects, created based upon a novel of their choice. Some of these were a working water fall by Braydon Jakins, a movie poster by Connor Henry, a Hobbit diorama by Simon Rucker, and a board game by Andrew Perrilloux and Brent Laiche. Others created such projects as video commercials, tests on their novels, and theatrical presentations based on a scene in the novels. A fun learning experience was enjoyed by all!

Punt, Pass and Kick Participants

Two Lancaster Elementary students participated in the NFL “Punt, Pass and Kick” Team Competition held in December in New Orleans. The event took place at the Superdome during the halftime activities at the New Orleans Saints and Carolina Panthers game.

l

Top sellers for the fundraiser attended a fascinating BMX bicycle stunt show, and students who sold over $400.00 were given a special Limo ride and were treated to lunch..

Students at Lancaster Elementary were rewarded with some exciting prizes for their fundraiser efforts this year.  The top two sellers were selected to be Lancaster’s Principal and Assistant Principal for a day.

Care Packages Shipped

l

Erosion Lesson

Students in Mrs. Jerrilyn Swett's third grade class at Lancaster Elementary recently went on a field trip to Fontainebleau State Park in Mandeville. While there, the students learned about erosion and its effects to the park along with the plant and animal life that can be found in Southeast Louisiana. The students also watched a wood carver carve a wooden spoon using a pocket knife and other antique wood carving devices.

Red Ribbon Week

Students at Lancaster Elementary School participated in Red Ribbon Week October 28th-November 1st.  Trooper Greg Marchand and Trooper Scott Mannino held an assembly to discuss the importance of safety and making good choices.  They also brought LSP K-9 Kimba for a demonstration on finding hidden drugs.

Lancaster Elementary's Parent Teacher Association held a Boosterthon Fun Run on Friday, October 25, 2013.  Students learned about respecting others, showing sportsmanship, sticking together, and recognizing others' strengths.  The student body ran a total 1,461 miles throughout the day.

Spider Cookies and Web Lesson

Students in Mrs. Linsdsay Antoine's third grade class created spider cookies and learned how to eat like a spider by creating a web and venom for the insect while participating in station activities after reading Charlotte's Web.

Carving a Pumpkin Lesson

Lancaster Elementary students in Ms. Melissa Nolan's class enjoyed a lesson on verbs and adjectives they would use for carving a pumpkin.  The students also participated in an activity learning the steps on how to carve a pumpkin.

Throughout their study the students examined the different forms around them in everyday life. Helping Others

l

Students at Lancaster Elementary School recently donated 610 pounds of food to the Covington Food Bank.  Mrs. Charlotte Milton and Mrs. Taeia Paulsell had their 3rd grade students graph the food items in which they found that 348 items were cans, 65 were boxes, and 25 were other. USA Map Painted on Playground

Students from Christ Episcopal's Key Club created a 50 foot wide map of the United States on Lancaster Elementary School's basketball court.  The group of 24 high school students gave up their Saturday to paint and help students at Lancaster get actively involved in their geography studies. CPR Training

Lancaster Elementary faculty and staff had the opportunity to attend a valuable CPR and first aid training.

 

Science Investigation

Ms. Dionne Schoen's 5th grade science class at Lancaster Elementary is trying to determine if the shape of a plane's wings affect how far it flies. Students work together to calculate the average distance and create a graph to display the data. All steps of the Scientific Method are explored throughout this activity. The kids are having fun and loving it!
