Recruitment and Retention Incentive Plan
(04-08-2022)
STPPS has a new plan in place to attract and retain the best of the best in critical shortage areas. Superintendent Frank Jabbia announced his new Recruitment and Retention Incentive Plan at the April 7, 2022, School Board Committee as a Whole meeting. The plan offers new teachers and support employees, and current SWE teachers and support employees, supplemental pay that increases their compensation levels based on the salary schedule. This increase in pay offers these employees a higher salary throughout their entire careers, not just a one time bonus.

“I am excited to have this plan in place so we can draw the attention of many more highly qualified candidates to join our team,” said Superintendent Frank Jabbia. “We want to compensate our hard-working employees for the outstanding job they do for our students and make sure new employees receive the same incentives as current employees. This plan is just a part of our overall commitment to make sure we stay competitive and make sure the pieces are in place to ensure our students are successful.

An employee’s starting salary is based on years of experience. Each year of experience represents a dollar amount increase to their salary known as a step. Different classifications of employees receive different dollar amounts for each step. Click here to view the STPPS 2021-22 Salary Schedule.

Recruitment Incentives for New Teachers:
  • First-year teachers, and teachers new to STPPS with prior experience, will start with a salary reflecting an additional two steps. This results in a $1,000 salary increase.
  • New certified SWE teachers will receive an additional two steps ($1,000). This results in a total of four steps when combined with the two step new teacher incentive. This results in a $2,000 salary increase.
  • New teachers who are not certified in a critical shortage area but agree to go on Out-of-Field Authorization (OFAT) will earn one additional step ($500). This results in a total of three steps when combined with the two step new teacher incentive. This results in a $1,500 salary increase.
Retention Incentives for Current Teachers:
  • Current Students with Exceptionalities (SWE) teachers will receive an additional two steps to their salary ($1,000). This is in addition to the two step increase they will already be receiving in July. The total four steps results in a $2,000 salary increase.
  • Current teachers on OFAT, or teachers who decide to go on OFAT in the future, will receive one additional step ($500). This is in addition to the two step increase they will already be receiving in July. The total three steps results in a $1,500 salary increase.
Recruitment Incentives for Bus Drivers:
  • Bus Drivers new to STPPS, entering their first year or with prior experience, will receive an additional two steps to their salary. This results in a $700 salary increase.
  • We will now pay for the CDL fee if a bus driver new hire works for our district for 90 work days.
  • We will now pay for bus driver new hires to complete “Behind the Wheel Training”. If a bus driver new hire works for our district for 90 work days, they will receive retroactive substitute pay for the three (3) days of “Behind the Wheel Training” ($160 per day; $480 total).
Recruitment and Retention Incentives for Support Employees:

Non-Management Support Employees, current and new, will have an increase in their salary for higher education.
  • Support employees with an Associate Degree, or education above high school, will earn one additional step. This results in a $350 salary increase.
  • Support employees with a Bachelor’s Degree will earn two additional steps. This results in a $700 salary increase.
  • Support employees with a Master’s Degree will earn three additional steps. This results in a $1050 salary increase.
The goal of the Recruitment and Retention Incentive Plan is to help recruit employees in critical shortage areas. STPPS is currently in the collective bargaining process with the St. Tammany Federation of Teachers and School Employees to agree on provisions for current employees. The incentives in this plan are in addition to any outcomes of collective bargaining and state pay increases.
