Residency Program Continues to Thrive

As part of its commitment to help train future teachers, STPPS grew its Teacher Residency Program for the 2018-2019 school year. The program which debuted for the 2017-2018 year includes partnerships with Southeastern Louisiana University, Loyola University in New Orleans, and the University of Louisiana at Monroe.

The program's second year includes 20 mentor teachers and 16 teacher candidates at eight STPPS school sites: Bonne Ecole Elementary, Boyet Junior High, Creekside Junior High, Cypress Cove Elementary, Honey Island Elementary, Little Oak Middle, Riverside Elementary, and Whispering Forest Elementary.

The Residency Program is designed to provide teacher candidates with a full-year classroom residency alongside an experienced mentor teacher, coupled with a competency-based curriculum that will provide them with the knowledge and skills needed for their first day of teaching.

Field-intensive and competency-based, the Residency Program aims to build resident capacity for success. It also focuses on improving student achievement, bridges course work with experience, and uses the co-teaching model.
