The look on Letrece McCoy's face says it all. McCoy, along with 15 other STPPS students, is one step closer to the Scripps National Spelling Bee as they advanced to the 2018 New Orleans Area Regional Spelling Bee.

For the fifth straight year, the Junior Auxiliary of Slidell sponsored spelling bees at Boyet Junior High and Clearwood Junior High.

By correctly spelling the word 'tamara', Michael Bartels won the Boyet Junior High Spelling Bee on Nov. 14. Joining Bartels from Boyet are Christina Jackson, Anabelle Goggin, Wilson Hou, Julia Spiess, Trey McGill, Hannah Joseph, and Travis Elmore.

On Nov. 15, Olivia Holmes won the Clearwood Junior High Spelling Bee by correctly spelling the word 'cyclops'. She will be joined by Clearwood classmates McCoy, Brayden Bostick, Keara Harbin, Kaelyn Hardrick, Amanda Krinsky, Amelia Britt, and Sophia Weaver.

The New Orleans Regional Spelling Bee will be held in March 2018 at Xavier University. The regional winner from Xavier and a parent will receive an all-expense-paid trip to the 2018 Scripps National Spelling Bee in May in Washington, D.C.
