Dejeune Richardson Wins Louisiana State Poetry Out Loud (03-13-2017)
Covington High's Dejeune Richardson placed first at the Louisiana State Poetry Out Loud competition at Capital Park Museum in Baton Rouge.
Richardson was one of three STPPS students competing at the state competition, joining Lakeshore High's Jane Kent and CHS classmate Camryn Caserta.
Richardson will represent the state of Louisiana in Washington, D.C., at the 2017 National Poetry Out Loud Championship in late April for a chance to win $20,000.
She is only the second person from St. Tammany Parish to win the state competition. The first winner was also a Covington High student, Maria Hefte in 2010.
Poetry Out Loud encourages students to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation. This program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about literary history and contemporary life. Since 2005, Poetry Out Loud has grown to reach more than 3 million students and 50,000 teachers from 10,000 school in every state, Washington, DC, the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
