STPPS Senior Named State Student of the Year Finalist

Mandeville High 12th grader Elisabeth McLaughlin is a finalist in the state’s 2017 Students of the Year competition.

“Congratulations to Elisabeth and her family for her selection as a finalist in the state competition,” said Superintendent Trey Folse. “She is such an impressive student who has already accomplished so much, and we are proud to have represent St. Tammany and our region.”

Elisabeth is one of seven 12th grade students selected as finalists in the competition coordinated by the Louisiana Department of Education.

Elisabeth excels academically while taking advanced courses in all core subjects. She is President of the Mandeville High Youth and Government Club, serves as her Class President and president of the Mandeville High Helping Hands Club and is a member of the Superintendent’s Advisory Panel. She is actively involved with YMCA youth and government activities including the Youth Model United Nations, Youth Legislature, and as a delegate for the Conference on National Affairs. She is a member of the Mandeville High Tennis Team, is a Certified All-American Archer and is a violinist and harpist for the Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestra, Northshore Harp Ensemble and the Northshore Strings Chamber Orchestra. She volunteers in the community with Keep Mandeville Beautiful, the Northshore Food Bank, the Samaritan Center, Heritage Manor and Christ Episcopal Nursing Homes and serves as an election commissioner. She is an AP Scholar with Distinction, has earned numerous academic and art awards and has been recognized at the state and national levels for her youth and government accomplishments. She recently was selected as one of only two students to represent Louisiana as a delegate to the United States Senate Youth Program. She aspires to help others through education and legislative reform as an environmental attorney.

Elisabeth advanced to the regional competition after being named district high school student of the year earlier this year.

One 5th, 8th, and 12th grader are selected from each of the state's seven regions to move on to compete in the state level competition.

The finalists will convene at the Louisiana State Museum in Baton Rouge on April 5th for an awards ceremony and the announcement of the state Students of the Year winners from each grade level.
