Three STPPS Students Headed to Poetry Out Loud State Competition

Covington High's Dejeune Richardson, Lakeshore High's Jane Kent and Covington High's Camryn Caserta were the top three finalists at the 2017 St. Tammany Parish Poetry Out Loud Competition held January 17 at Covington High.

Twenty-three students representing all eight STPPS high schools competed at the parish level.

Dejeune Richardson (first place), Jane Kent (second place) and Camryn Caserta (third place) will advance to the Louisiana State Championship in March at the Louisiana State Museum in Baton Rouge.

Winners from each state will compete in Washington, D.C., for the 2017 National Poetry Out Loud Championship.

Poetry Out Loud encourages students to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation. This program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about literary history and contemporary life. Since 2005, Poetry Out Loud has grown to reach more than 3 million students and 50,000 teachers from 10,000 school in every state, Washington, DC, the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
