STPPS Connections Honored at President's Arts Awards

St. Tammany Parish Public Schools were well-represented at the 12th annual President's Arts Awards held January 28 at the St. Tammany Parish Justice Center.

Two STPPS alumni and one current teacher were among the 10 honorees.

Salmen High alumnus Marty Sixkiller was honored with the Native Son Award. Raised in Slidell, Sixkiller worked for Dreamworks for 18 years on animation projects for film and television. During his tenure at the studio, he served in nine different roles and worked on animated films like "Shrek," "Madagascar," "How To Train Your Dragon," "Rise of the Guardians" and "Kung Fu Panda."

Covington High drama teacher Gary Mendoza was honored as the Performing Artist of the Year. Mendoza is an award-winning theatrical artist, teacher, director, playwright, actor and stage technician. He has performed and worked throughout regional theatres and was named Covington High's Teacher of the Year for 2012-2013.

Covington High alumnus and Southeastern Louisiana English instructor David Armand was named Literary Artist of the Year. He also serves as the associate editor for Louisiana Literature Press. The award-winning novelist has published three novels and most recently published his first memoir.
