Board Recognizes New National Board Certified Educators

Each year the St. Tammany Parish School Board holds a special program to recognize those teachers and other education professionals who have undergone the significant effort to achieve National Board certification. At the February Board meeting, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resource Pete Jabbia introduced five of the latest National Board Certified employees of the School System.

Those recognized were Brittney Byers, Tiffany Hewson, Richard “Vance” Lynch, Heather Riviere, and Melinda Hobgood.

Ms. Byers is now in her sixth year of teaching at Mandeville Elementary. A graduate of Southeastern Louisiana University in Elementary Education, she earned her Master’s Degree from LSU in Gifted Education. Her National Board Certification is in the area of Early Childhood Generalist.

Ms. Hewson has taught in St. Tammany Parish since 2001 and is currently teaching sixth grade at Tchefuncte Middle School. She earned dual certification from the University of New Orleans in Elementary Education and Mild Moderate Grades 1 through 12. Her area of national certification is Middle Childhood Generalist.

Mr. Lynch teaches computer technology classes at Covington High, where he has also taught physical science, biology, and Algebra in the past. At West Virginia University, he earned degrees in Biology, Psychology, and Liberal Arts. He completed his Master’s Degree at the University of Virginia in Secondary Science Education in 2002. Mr. Lynch has been recognized several times by the Louisiana Association of Computer Using Educators as well as receiving other awards and honors.

He was named St. Tammany Parish High School Teacher of the Year in 2011 and was selected as a Regional Finalist in the state Teacher of the Year program. He has also been named Chevron/Saints Teacher of the Year. His area of national board certification is Early Adolescence through Young Adulthood/Career and Technical Education. Mr. Jabbia also noted that Lynch had perfect attendance at this job for five of the past six years.

Ms. Riviere has been teaching for 11 years, currently at Covington Elementary School. A graduate in Early Childhood Education from Our Lady of Holy Cross College, her area of national board certification is Early Childhood Generalist.

Ms. Hobgood is the newest National Board Certified Guidance Counselor in the School System. She earned her B.A. Degree in Elementary Education from Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond and later completed her Master’s Degree in Counselor Education. A member of the Louisiana Counseling Association and the American School Counseling Association, she is a Licensed Professional Counselor, a National Certified Counselor, and a National Certified School Counselor. Joining the St. Tammany Public School System six years ago, she has been assigned to Madisonville Elementary, Madisonville Junior High, Clearwood Junior High, Bayou Woods Elementary, and, for the past two years, Lancaster Elementary.

School Board President Elizabeth Heintz congratulated them all for their accomplishment. “It is a rigorous process they go through to earn National Board Certification,” she said.

Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Pete Jabbia introduced each of them at the School Board meeting held later that night. “Achieving National Board Certification is no easy task,” he said. “It is a testament to personal and professional dedication, intense self-reflection and a drive for self-improvement. It also shows the high level of care and concern that they have for their students.”

The School System has 272 National Board certified employees: teachers, guidance counselors, social workers, speech therapists, and psychologists.
