Legislators Visit School Cafeterias

Several Louisiana state legislators are visiting schools in St. Tammany Parish this week, with an emphasis on learning how the food service programs and school cafeterias play an integral part in the health and education of students.

On Monday, February 4, Representative Kevin Pearson visited Slidell High and Representative John Schroder visited Folsom Junior High. On Tuesday Representative Scott Simon visited Abita Springs Elementary School, and on Wednesday, February 6, Rep. Schroder visited Pine View Middle School in Covington, Senator A. G. Crowe visited Slidell High, and Senator Ben Nevers visited Fifth Ward Junior High in Bush.

On Friday, Representative Harold Ritchie will stop by to meet with cafeteria staff at Fifth Ward Junior High in Bush. Representative Paul Hollis will visit Bayou Lacombe the week of March 4.

“We wanted to show our legislators the importance of the relationship between school meals and the health and education of our students,” said Superintendent W. L. “Trey” Folse, III. “I know our students would be excited to have the opportunity to share a meal with a state legislator and discuss all that they have learned about health and nutrition.”

During the legislator visits, the principal and students met them at the door, walked them to the cafeteria, and introduced the cafeteria staff. The school’s food service manager then explained the food service and child nutrition program.  The highlight of the event was the legislator putting on a chef’s hat and apron and having them help serve the students lunch.

State Representative Scott Simon visited the cafeteria at Abita Springs Elementary School on Tuesday, February 5, to meet with Principal Rebecca Stogner and Supervisor of Food Service Pat Farris. He discussed the child nutrition program with them, noted that St. Tammany had won many awards, and mentioned how other School Systems across the state are meeting the challenge of recent USDA regulations. He also helped take up lunch tickets during a lunch period.
