Videos Explain Changes In School Menus

Several changes were made to School Food Service menus in the fall of 2012 as a result of a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) effort to improve the nutritional quality of meals for students. Informational videos explaining these changes are now available for students and parents.

The videos are being shown in the schools across the parish to help students understand the new USDA requirements. One video was created for elementary and middle school audiences, and another video is aimed at junior high and high school students.

The menu changes are designed to help combat the problem of childhood obesity by offering different menu items as well as specifying the quantity of each item offered. The changes will continue to meet the nutritional needs of school children, but also aim to increase consumption of fruits and vegetables.

Over the past several years the St. Tammany Parish Public School System has won numerous national awards for its School Food Service. Under the new requirements, school cafeterias will offer a greater variety as well as increase the serving sizes of fruits and vegetables.
