Frequently Asked Questions

How do I apply for free or reduced price meals?
Apply online.  This is the fastest method to have your child(ren) approved.

OR

Complete an application form and submit to the cafeteria manager or the School Food Service Department in the C. J. Schoen Administrative Complex in Covington.  Application forms are available at all schools and the C. J. Schoen Administrative Complex in Covington.

How do I know if my child(ren) qualify for free or reduced price meals?
You will receive a letter notifying you that your child(ren) have been approved for free or reduced price meals.  Do NOT assume that your child(ren) were approved for free or reduced price meals just because you submitted an application.

Do I need to apply if my children received free or reduced price meals last school year?
Yes, students will receive the same benefits as last year for the first 30 days of school.  However, you need to re-apply for these benefits every year.

When should I apply?
You may apply after July 1 using the online application.

OR

You may apply when you receive a copy of the application form from your child’s school after school begins.

Who qualifies for free or reduced-price meals?

  • Children in households receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits (SNAP--formerly Food Stamps) or TANF are eligible to receive free meals regardless of household income
  • If your household income falls within Federal Income limits, your child(ren) may be eligible to receive free or reduced-price meal benefits.  See Guidelines.
  • Foster children may also qualify for free or reduced-price meal benefits

Do I need to complete an application for each child?
No.  Only one application per household is required to apply for free or reduced-price meal benefits.  All children, including foster children living in the household must be listed on the application.  Incomplete applications will not be approved; therefore, all required information requested on the application must be included.  Return the completed application to child's school office, school cafeteria or the School Food Service Department in the C. J. Schoen Administrative Complex in Covington.

If I do not qualify at this time, may I apply again later?
Yes. You may re-apply at any time during the school year if your household size increases, if the household income decreases, or if the household starts receiving SNAP or TANF benefits. If you become unemployed, your children may also be able to receive free or reduced-price meals.
