Safe Schools ::..

Providing a caring and safe environment for learning is an ongoing priority in all St. Tammany public schools. The System addresses safety issues through constant vigilance, early intervention to prevent crisis, crisis planning, encouraging student pride in their schools, and reporting instances of concern. Some specific factors helping to maintain a productive school environment include, among others:

• strong community support from parents, social services /civic organizations, law enforcement agencies and the judicial system;
  
  
• counseling services, peer mediation, conflict resolution and character education programs;
  
  
• an at-risk behavior evaluation system;
  
  
• a plan at every school for dealing with crises ranging from hazardous weather to weapons;
  
  
• effective System code of conduct;
  
  
• enforcement of state laws governing illegal substances and weapons on school grounds;
  
  
• an alternative school for students with behavior problems that might otherwise result in expulsion;
  
  
• the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D. A. R. E.) program;
  
  
• state law and System policy requiring school sign-in and identification tags for all school visitors and System employees;
  
  
• a partnership with Crimestoppers that provides an anonymous tip line for students and parents to report serious or potentially serious safety concerns;
  
  
• an emergency information brochures giving important emergency preparation and procedure information that is provided to all parents; and
  
  
• special information telephone lines for parents to use in contacting the System for emergency information and a phone notification system for contacting parents about important matters.
